Humanities

The College of Humanities was founded in 1997, the most recent addition to the University. It consists of two related Departments: the Department of Psychology and the Department of Cross-Cultural Studies. The former Department is divided into two sub-Departments: Clinical Psychology and Social Psychology. The latter Department is also divided into two sub-Departments: Japanese Culture and Comparative Studies of Cultures.

As mind and culture are reciprocally shaped by each other, the programs in body Departments aim at studying mind and culture from interdisciplinary points of view. To accomplish that aim, a unique, individual curriculum has been introduced: those students who major in one sub-Department are required to minor in another sub-Department offered either by another Department within the same College or by the other Colleges. In other words, students major in one discipline, and minor in the other which may possibly be quite different from the major. Again, this type of combination of major with minor disciplines enables students to show a marked improvement in the skills of synthesis and integration, and in the comprehension of mind and culture.

Small seminar classes and intensive foreign language courses are offered to first through fourth year students successively. Computer literacy is also emphasized and is compulsory for first and second year students.

Students can obtain many kinds of vocational qualifications like 'Curator' and 'Certified Psychologist', and acquire candidacy for other important license like 'Certified Clinical Psychologist'.
